This interesting pistol is operated by depressing this hammer-looking part with your thumb, which cocks the internals of the gun but also make them drop through the frame from a spring-loaded hinge under the barrel. The gun is then locked that way by the extractor popping out - ejecting your empty brass if you just fired the gun - at which point you can insert a fresh round, whose rim will pop the extractor back in its recess, letting the gun’s breech back up and ready to fire.
